The Food-Energy-Water Nexus - Oil and Gas Wastewater and Irrigation

with Dr. Andrew (AJ) Kondash

Welcome to Science by the Slice! We're excited to host this hybrid event. We'll meet in person at 700 Park Offices Drive, (behind the Boxyard) to hear this month's speaker while we enjoy pizza, but space is limited. You can also join live remotely via Sigma Xi's Facebook page if you're unable to make it in person. A zoom link will also be sent out to registered attendees.

About the talk

The food-energy-water nexus is the overlapping connection between food, energy, and water systems. It means that the production, consumption, and distribution of food, energy, and water can directly impact each other. For example, growing crops requires water and energy, while generating electricity may consume water and emit greenhouse gases. Understanding these interdependencies and planning for their change is one way we can help combat climate change and stretch limited resources. In this talk I'll show an example describing the potential re-use of a marginal water source, oil and gas produced water, for watering crops to help with water shortages caused by drought.

Speaker Bio

Andrew (AJ) Kondash is a research environmental scientist in RTI’s Center for Environmental Health, Risk, and Sustainability (CEHRS). His work focuses on engaging diverse and underserved communities to help them evaluate and understand the nexus between environmental health and environmental science. Dr. Kondash’s work combines environmental and engineering concepts such as chemistry, water quality, air quality, geospatial analysis, and data analysis methods to highlight issues and push for sustainability in light of climate change and economic uncertainty. He is passionate about communicating complex scientific concepts in easy-to-understand language and has developed a wide body of scientific stature focusing on lead in drinking water, PFAS, lead service line identification and replacement, oil and gas, and other environmental issues.
